Completed in 1961 to a design by architect James W. Strutt, 190 Edgewood is a low, horizontally composed modern house set within the wooded and varied terrain of Skyridge, near the edge of Gatineau Park. Its one-storey massing, flat roof, broad integrated overhangs and clerestory glazing emphasize strong horizontal lines, while vertical concrete-block elements organize the elevations and visually anchor the building to its site. A restrained palette of concrete block and wood reinforces the relationship between structure and landscape. The lower level is recessed beneath the main floor, at points substantially, allowing the house to follow the slope and reducing its apparent mass; at the front, the projecting living area shelters an open carport. This careful accommodation of topography, combined with terraces and framed views, reflects the site-responsive approach characteristic of many modern houses in Skyridge.

The house has evolved while retaining the essential character of Strutt’s original design. In 1989, Strutt designed an addition to the left of the original building using a compatible architectural language, and a series of terraces was introduced over time to strengthen the connection between interior spaces and the surrounding landscape. Its inclusion as a property of strong heritage value in the City of Gatineau’s modern heritage inventory recognizes the quality of its architectural design, its association with a leading regional modernist, and its continuing legibility despite later changes. Within Skyridge, 190 Edgewood forms part of a broader concentration of postwar houses shaped by experimentation, informal siting and close engagement with the rocky, wooded setting, demonstrating how modern residential design was adapted to the distinctive landscape at the urban edge of Gatineau Park.
