Re-energizing Docomomo Ontario Ahead of the Docomomo International Conference

Ottawa Train Station

As the Docomomo International Conference approaches, momentum is building to re-energize Docomomo in Ontario and strengthen a province-wide network dedicated to the documentation and conservation of modern architecture. This renewed focus brings together practitioners, advocates, and community partners to share knowledge, elevate exemplary projects, and expand public understanding of the value of postwar places, from civic buildings and campuses to cultural and infrastructural landmarks.

Capital Modern is pleased to announce that it will be supporting these efforts by joining the organizing committee and helping to amplify news and initiatives from Ottawa and Eastern Ontario related to the conservation and rehabilitation of modern architecture. In the lead-up to the conference, we look forward to highlighting local work, connecting people and projects across the region, and contributing to a stronger, more visible Docomomo Ontario presence that can carry this energy well beyond the conference itself.

Ottawa offers a compelling concentration of modern heritage, including many places of national significance, from the former Ottawa Train Station to Carleton University’s School of Architecture, and the former Ottawa City Hall, among many others across the capital region. These sites demonstrate the range and ambition of mid- and late-twentieth-century design in Ottawa, and underscore why timely conservation, thoughtful rehabilitation, and informed public conversation are essential to keeping this legacy visible and valued.
